Diran Basmadjian Graduate Scholarship in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry

To be awarded to one outstanding doctoral student who is registered in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering program.

Eligibility

Open to doctoral students in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry who have worked as a Teaching Assistant for any course delivered in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering for a minimum of one session.

Nomination Guidelines

Applications will be assessed on the basis of outstanding performance in the areas of:

(a) Classroom instruction, including lectures, tutorials, small-group teaching, and laboratory instruction
(b) Consultation with students outside of class
(c) Use of effective teaching methods and the development of course material

Supporting Documentation

(a) A letter of nomination from a Faculty member who has supervised the Teaching Assistant to be sent directly from the Faculty member to the Graduate Administrator at grad.chemeng@utoronto.ca

(b) A one to two page personal statement on teaching which outlines the applicant’s experience working as a Teaching Assistant in the Faculty, with information such as the applicant’s:

– beliefs about teaching
– approach to teaching
– specific contributions to course design or materials
– approach to facilitation of lectures, tutorials or laboratories
– approach to the supervision of undergraduate thesis or summer research students

(c) Testimonial letters supporting the application, which may include letters from Students, Alumni, Staff and Faculty

(d) If available, a summary of the teaching evaluation results for the applicant for at least one course. If you do not have a copy of the results, request them from the course instructor(s) for the course(s) for which you were a Teaching Assistant.
