SUMMARY:Search for Assistant Professor\, Process Intensification: Prakitr Srisuma
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry is pleased to host a special research and teaching seminar by Prakitr Srisuma on Thursday March 12th and Friday March 13th\, respectively\, in WB-215 and/or virtually on teams. \nPlease see the full details below: \n  \nRESEARCH SEMINAR: March 12th from 10:00 – 11:00 am (WB-215 or on MS Teams) \nTitle: Systems Engineering for Drug Product Formulation and Delivery in Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing \nAbstract:\nThe biopharmaceutical industry has witnessed substantial growth over the past decade. Various biotherapeutics become increasingly important and are now used much more widely\, including monoclonal antibodies\, cell and gene therapies\, and mRNA vaccines. However\, the current biopharmaceutical manufacturing is facing several challenges\, e.g.\, high manufacturing costs\, limited scalability\, complex process design and operation\, and stringent regulatory requirements. Existing technologies used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing are still developing. \nMy research focuses on the development of novel computational tools and algorithms to advance (bio)pharmaceutical manufacturing\, with emphasis on processes related to drug product formulation and delivery. In this talk\, two case studies will be presented. In the first case study\, I will discuss the world’s first digital twin for continuous lyophilization (aka freeze drying) of biotherapeutics. This digital twin\, which serves as a virtual representation of the process\, is demonstrated for real-time simulation\, estimation\, control\, and analysis of the manufacturing system\, accelerating the entire lyophilization cycle by several hours. In the second case study\, I will describe a state-of-the-art thermal imaging system for monitoring and control of the cell thawing process in cell therapy. By combining state estimation with thermal imaging data\, our system can accurately track the thawing process in real time\, enabling process automation. Braatz in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He received a PhD from MIT\, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (UK)\, and a BEng from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand). Before moving to MIT\, he was a process engineer at PTT Exploration and Production\, Thailand’s national oil and gas company. His research focuses on the development of computational tools and algorithms for advanced manufacturing\, specifically for (bio)pharmaceutical processes such as lyophilization (aka freeze drying)\, cell thawing\, and agitated filter drying. His work spans multiple key areas in process systems engineering\, including process modeling\, optimization\, control theory\, and data analytics. Recognitions include the AIChE CAST Director’s Student Presentation Award (third place)\, the AIChE PD2M Student Award\, the ACC Student Travel Grant\, and the Fulbright Thai Graduate Scholarship.
