This one-day bootcamp is for incoming ChemE students of all skill levels.
It is useful even if you do not plan to become a programmer or work in AI. Most engineers will generate data through experiments, simulations, measurements, or other technical work. Understanding how that data will later be used can help you collect better data, document it properly, notice problems earlier, and work more effectively with computational collaborators.
No previous programming or AI experience is expected. Students who already know how to code are also encouraged to attend. We will go beyond Python syntax and spend time on problem solving, coding philosophy, debugging, software engineering practices, reproducibility, and how to organize and communicate technical work so other people can understand and use it.
The day will mix hands-on activities with short readings and small-group discussions.

Students should bring a laptop and charger. Lunch, coffee, and snacks will be provided.
Instructor

Dr. Benjamin Sanchez-Lengeling is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto and leads the Chemical Cognition Lab. His work focuses on using machine learning, data-driven methods, and computational tools to solve problems in chemistry and engineering. He previously worked at Google Brain and Google DeepMind and has taught courses and workshops on machine learning, neural networks, software development, and AI for chemical data. He is also involved in science education and outreach through Clubes de Ciencia México and RIIAA.
