Modeling is central to understanding and solving complex research problems. This talk supports the idea that progress often begins with constructing models that capture the essential mechanisms of complex systems. We explore how modeling supports scientific discovery, from identifying fundamental phenomena to predicting system behavior. Examples include coupled hydrodynamics and heat and mass transfer in falling films involving complex fluids, applications in sensor fouling in car industry and self-cleaning of surfaces of different wettabilities. Together, these cases illustrate how models help connect fundamental understanding with practical engineering solutions.
