PhD (entered after completing an MASc)

Please note that this is the typical progress through the PhD program for students who have entered the PhD program after completing an MASc.  A student’s progress may vary, and students are encouraged to discuss their progress regularly with their supervisor(s).  Normally a student will publish 3 to 4 journal articles by the end of their PhD program.

Year 1

• CHE2222H – Safety Training Workshop, prior to starting research in the lab
• JDE1000H – Ethics in Research, in either the Fall or Winter session
• CHE1102H – Research Methods and Project Execution, usually in the second session of study
• CHE3001H – Graduate Student Seminar (Lectures at the Leading Edge) in both the Fall and Winter sessions
• CHE3010Y – PhD Research (PhD Reading Committee) – within 9 months of beginning the program
• One to three academic courses
• PhD Qualification Oral Examination (within the first 9 to 13 months of study)

Year 2

• CHE3001H – Graduate Student Seminar (Lectures at the Leading Edge) in both the Fall and Winter sessions
• One to three academic courses
• CHE3010Y – PhD Research (PhD Reading Committee) typically 9 months after the Qualifying Exam
• Submit one or two journal articles to peer-reviewed journals

Year 3

• CHE3001H – Graduate Student Seminar (Lectures at the Leading Edge) in both the Fall and Winter sessions
• Any remaining academic courses
•  CHE3010Y- PhD Research (PhD Reading Committee Meeting) – 9 months after the Supervisory Committee meeting held in Year 2
• Achieve PhD Candidacy (completion of all academic courses, regular committee meetings and adequate research progress)
• Submit one or two journal articles to peer-reviewed journals

Year 4

• CHE3001H – Graduate Student Seminar (Lectures at the Leading Edge) in both the Fall and Winter sessions
• CHE3010Y – PhD Research (PhD Reading Committee Meeting) – 9 months after the Supervisory Committee meeting held in Year 3
• Completion of the thesis
• PhD Departmental Oral Examination
• SGS PhD Final Oral Examination
• Submit one or two journal articles to peer-reviewed journals
