Officially established in 1904, with the first PhD graduating in 1933, our department is one of the largest and oldest Chemical Engineering departments in Canada. It continues to advance both engineering and pure science today as it has throughout its history. We believe Chemical Engineering has a key role to play in global issues such as sustainability and healthcare. Led by a team of world-renowned professors and assisted by experienced and dedicated staff, our research program is among the most diverse and exciting in the world.
At the core of our graduate program are our students. Our reputation as a research powerhouse and a collaborative and caring community has served us well in attracting the best and brightest minds from around the world. Here, we enable and challenge you to reach your full potential by providing opportunities for growth through various academic and non-academic programs. We also provide opportunities for social and extracurricular activities through the Chemical Engineering Graduate Students Association (CEGSA). It is our hope that through us, you will be able to further develop your professional skills and build solid foundation for fruitful and rewarding careers.
As Canada’s top-ranked department in our discipline, we offer a unique combination of chemical engineering and applied chemistry that allows students to do high-impact work on important real-world problems.
From human health and the environment to climate change and sustainable energy, the world is facing tremendous challenges. We are home to one of the strongest research and teaching faculties in North America and offer research-based (MASc / PhD) and professional degrees (MEng) that prepare you to tackle today’s biggest challenges.
Our dynamic professors have outstanding international reputations for innovative research addressing these urgent issues, and bring this expertise into the classroom. Whether in the lab or in a class, you will work with a wide range of industrial sectors, including bioprocessing, biomedical, environmental, financial, health, resource extraction, and pulp and paper.
Our unique blend of research in engineering and applied chemical and biochemical sciences will give you a powerful combination of skills. You will work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment and take advantage of our strong research and training collaborations with other departments and institutions, as well as many industry partners.
You will have access to our well-equipped facilities, located in the heart of a vibrant, multi-cultural city that is Canada’s economic centre.
