U of T iGEM Team Earns Top Honours at 2025 iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Grand Jamboree—recognized as the world’s largest annual synthetic biology event—was held this year from October 28 to 31 at the Paris Convention Centre. The event brings together more than 5,000 participants, including students, researchers, and industry professionals from over 50 countries. Often described as the World Expo of Synthetic Biology, the Jamboree provides a global stage for teams to present their research, exchange ideas, and collaborate on emerging advances in biotechnology.

Teams participated in project showcases, panel discussions, startup pitch sessions, career events, and informal networking gatherings. The environment fosters scientific curiosity and interdisciplinary teamwork, highlighting the power of collaboration in shaping the future of synthetic biology.

This year, the University of Toronto team earned a series of outstanding distinctions—placing them among the strongest performing teams internationally:

  • Gold Medal
  • Best Overgrad Therapeutics Project
  • Top 10 Overgrad Team Overall
  • Top Overgrad Team in North America
  • Nomination for Best Model Special Prize
Awards presented to U of T’s iGem

These unprecedented achievements reflect the team’s deep commitment, creativity, and technical excellence. Their accomplishments stand as a testament to the collaborative spirit and research culture within our department.
