Departmental Awards

Departmental Awards are open to all MASc and PhD students within the funded cohort, unless otherwise specified. Each award may have different eligibility requirements which may include academic merit and financial need. Most award funds come from interest income of endowed funds generously donated from various sources.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Award NameAward Description
APSC GSEF AwardsTo be awarded to doctoral-stream graduate students in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering based on academic merit.
Colin Hahnemann Bayley Fellowship in the Department of Chemical EngineeringAwarded on the basis of academic excellence to an incoming graduate students. Students will be known as the Colin Hahnemann Bayley Fellows and will hold the award for two years.
George Harrap Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Chemical EngineeringSupports registered graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry on the basis of academic merit.
Rein Otson Memorial Graduate ScholarshipAwarded to outstanding international graduate student(s), preferably from Estonia, who are registered within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Preference will then be given to candidates whose research is within bio-sciences and/or bio-engineering fields, with a focus on environmental concerns, especially relating to air and water issues.
Edward Jarvis Tyrrell FellowshipTo be awarded on the basis of academic merit to a full-time research graduate student enrolled in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry.

RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIPS

Diran Basmadjian Graduate Scholarship in Chemical Engineering and Applied ChemistryTo be awarded to one outstanding doctoral student who is registered in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering program.

Open to doctoral students in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry who have worked as a Teaching Assistant for any course delivered in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering for a minimum of one session.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of outstanding performance in the areas of:

(a) Classroom instruction, including lectures, tutorials, small-group teaching, and laboratory instruction
(b) Consultation with students outside of class
(c) Use of effective teaching methods and the development of course material
Professor Doug Reeve Engineering Leaders of Tomorrow Graduate AwardThe objective of these Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Awards is to recognize students in Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry who have shown the potential to become outstanding leaders.  This potential may be demonstrated in a number of ways, including participation in student councils or clubs, community organizations, cultural groups, or athletics. Applicants should enumerate their service to others through volunteering or community work. Recipients should have the ability to inspire others to action and to excellence.
Professor Honghi Tran Practical Research Award in Sustainable Energy and Chemical ProcessingTo be awarded to a graduate student co-supervised by a professor in Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry with preference given to applied research in the industries of Pulp & Paper, Forestry and Renewable Energy.
Bert Wasmund Graduate Fellowship in Sustainable Energy Research in the Department of Chemical EngineeringAwarded on the basis of academic merit to doctoral-stream graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry specializing in the recovery and utilization of sustainable energy derived from the sun. Preference given to students conducting research in power generation from solar cells and wind turbines, systems for the efficient use of sustainable derived thermal and electric energy, and energy storage by batteries and other means.

Helen L Cross (nee Colquhuon) Memorial Graduate Scholarship (OSOTF)To be given to a graduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to a female student and if possible from Northern Ontario.
William J. Dowkes Graduate Bursary (OSOTF)Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry.
Eco-Tec Founder's Fellowship (OSOTF)To be awarded to a student pursuing environmental graduate studies in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry who has demonstrated financial need.
Graydon Memorial FellowshipTo be awarded to graduate students registered in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Indigenous students are encouraged to apply.
Frank Howard Guest BursaryAwards will be made to students enrolled in any graduate program in the Faculty in any Department on the basis of academic standing and financial need on the recommendation of the Graduate Coordinator.
McLean Foundation Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OSOTF)To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry on the basis of financial need. Academic excellence will also be taken into consideration.
W. H. Rapson Memorial Award (OSOTF)To be given to a graduate student on the basis of financial need.  Academic merit will also be considered.  The student will be specifically studying in the Pulp and Paper Research Centre within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry.
Wallberg FellowshipFellows must be graduates of a recognized university who are pursuing advanced study and research in any branch of Engineering and who are enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies as candidates for graduate degrees. Academic merit and financial need will be considered.

OSOTF Eligibility Requirements

Awards categorized as “OSOTF” (Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund) or “OTSS” (Ontario Trust for Student Support) are open to eligible applicants who meet the following criteria, in addition to the criteria specified by the individual award:

At the time of application students must:

  1. Demonstrate financial need;
  2. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person; and
  3. Be a resident of Ontario at the time of the application, as defined by one of the following criteria:
    • Student has always lived in Ontario (i.e. Ontario is the only Canadian province/territory that the student has lived in); or
    • Ontario is the last province in which student has lived for 12 months in a row without being a full-time postsecondary student; or
    • Student lives in Ontario now and has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.
    • If student is married/common-law, student can be considered an Ontario resident if: Spouse has always lived in Ontario; or Ontario is the last province in which spouse has lived for 12 months in a row without being a full-time postsecondary student; or Both of these statements are true: a) Student lives in Ontario now; and b) Student and spouse have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.
    • If student qualifies as a dependent student, student is considered an Ontario resident if: Ontario is the last province in which parent(s) have lived for at least 12 months in a row; or Both of these statements are true: a) Student lives in Ontario now; and b) Student and parent(s) have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.
