The MEng Program at Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry is tailored with your career in mind. Our program development and initiatives are focused and curated to ensure that our graduates have a deeper understanding of course materials and potential career paths. To get a better understanding of your options after graduation, this section breaks down potential job titles by each of our 10 MEng emphases and under each job title includes some companies which hires for these positions. In addition to typical Professional career paths, we have also included sections on Academia and Entrepreneurship.

Academia

The MEng is traditionally being a professional degree, however, some of our students pursue a MEng Project and during that time, they discover the challenging and rewarding opportunities for academic research. During this path, and through discussions with their supervisor, they continue their education at the doctorate level in pursuit of a PhD.

A PhD can lead to many potential career paths utilizing their exceptional research skills.

Entrepreneurship

Housed in the Faculty of Engineering, the ElITE emphasis provides students with an abundant of practical and innovative ways to begin thinking about Entrepreneurship and Leadership in an engineering context., Outside of this Faculty, the broader University offers a catalogue of world-class centers of expertise accessible by our students. As an MEng student, you will have exclusive access to ILEAD courses, events and other programming to support your entrepreneurial spirit!

The Entrepreneurship Hatchery at the University of Toronto, an initiative out of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, provides a comprehensive suite of activities, programs and novel methodologies designed to help individuals develop skills we sum up as entrepreneurial capital: form teams, validate their ideas, develop new competencies, launch start-up companies and secure seed funding. Those that come to the Hatchery are generating new ideas, solving high-impact problems and stimulating the economy through job creation.

As of January 2022, the Hatchery has accepted more than 400 new ventures to its programs and launched more than 100 start-up companies which have already created more than 600 new jobs. These founders, including students, alumni and members of the broader community, are making social and economic impact in Toronto and beyond.

C of E

The U of T Center of Entrepreneurship is housed in the Faculty of Arts & Science and offers U of T students access to both undergraduate and graduate courses, clubs, funding and awards in addition to many other free resources including the Intellectual Property Education Program. They have a huge community portal, many partners and accelerator supports.

The University of Toronto Entrepreneurship (UTE) community does much more than accelerate startups. We accelerating ideas, people, social impact, and technologies too. All while striving to create an environment that is inclusive and representative of the diverse and talented innovators and entrepreneurs around us.

UTE is a central voice for entrepreneurship across U of T’s three campuses and represents a powerful network of 10+ accelerators. We are here to support, develop and celebrate our best and brightest founders and their startups through a broad range of resources, network access and entrepreneurship activities.

The UTE ecosystem provides mentorship, expertise, resources, and strategic connections to give entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey the tools they need to effectively start, build and scale their businesses.

CDL

Incubated from U of T's Rotman School of Management, the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a nonprofit organization that delivers an objectives-based program for massively scalable, seed-stage, science-and-technology-based companies. CDL has designed a new approach to enterprising research and innovation, nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset through expert opinion, funding opportunities, research analysis, and business development support.

If you are thinking about a start-up but do not have a business-based education, CDL may be an option to hone and grow your seed-stage business.

Currently the CDL operates through 20 different streams and has expanded to 12 locations--8 in North America and 4 in Europe.
