Our People

The MEng Program at Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry has dedicated personnel supporting students and program development. We are a synergistic group who work on different aspects of the program. Feel free to get to know more about us and please contact us if you have any questions!

Charles Jia

Professor Charles Q. Jia
Associate Chair - Continuing Professional Development
cq.jia@utoronto.ca

Dr. Charles Jia is a professor working on materials science and engineering. After two engineering degrees from Chongqing University in China, he came to Canada, received a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1994 and joined U of T, first as an NSERC postdoctoral fellow and a faculty member later in 1996. Dr. Jia directs the Green Technology Laboratory at U of T, exploring new ways to create novel materials from natural and industrial waste streams. Much of his academic work is marked by his “obsession” with sulphur and carbon - two elements he had fun playing with when studying metallurgy in China. Currently, his lab explores biomass-derived porous carbons for their applications in energy storage and water purification. Dr. Jia is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE) and the Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC). He has served in various leadership roles, including the President of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering (CSChE) and the Chair of the MetSoc Environment Section. A weekend warrior, he bikes long distances on his Cervelo. In addition, he plays badminton regularly and participates in tournaments, specializing in doubles and mixed doubles.
