Professor Charles Jia appointed Interim Associate Chair, Graduate Studies

Dear faculty, staff, and students,

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Charles Jia as the Interim Associate Chair, Graduate Studies from July 17, 2023 to June 30, 2024, while continuing to hold his position as the Associate Chair, Continuing Professional Development.

Charles joined the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry in September 1994 as an NSERC PDF after obtaining his Ph.D. from McMaster University and was promoted to Full Professor in July 2007. He has served the Department in various capacities, including Associate Chair-Graduate Studies from January 2012 to July 2017. Charles is a Member of the Academic Board of the University and the Chair of the Honours & Awards Committee of our Department. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.

Please join me in congratulating Charles and thanking him for his ongoing contributions to the Department.

I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Professor Molly Shoichet, who has served the Department as our Associate Chair, Graduate Studies since 2020. Molly was instrumental in improving the graduate student experience with more transparent communication, providing guidance on effective graduate supervision in collaboration with the Centre for Graduate Mentorship and Supervision, and increasing the stipend of doctoral stream students as well as the number of scholarship recipients.

Sincerely,

Ramin Farnood
Professor & Chair, Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry
